Minivan RV

When I first discovered that others full time in RVs or van conversions or bus
conversion, I was instantly hooked. As with most potential dreams, I thought big
first - either a class C or a bus conversion. However, while I can work from
home for my current job, I do need a constant internet connection because the
expectation is that I am available during the standard American workday. I then
started brainstorming other ideas until I came up with a plan that can use my
current vehicle, a 2006 Honda Odyssey, not too much money to start out, and only
workable for spring and fall trips.

Here is my plan for draft version 0.1 (aka the minivan camper experiment):
  • This plan is for camping at campgrounds or where camping is expected
  • Non-permanent conversion & easy to do
  • Remove the second row of seats, fold the back row down (stow-n-tow)
  • Assemble a metal twin frame, put particle board on frame, foam mattress topper, make bed as normal
  • sealable storage bins to hold food & camping kitchen stuff, stow under bed.
  • folding table and camp chair to use in the hitch tent
  • some kind of curtains for privacy (not sure how yet)

Shopping list:
  • Get a a OEM tent for my van that fits on the back hatch
  • Get supplies for a camping kitchen: stove, a lightweight pot, higher capacity (1-2 gal) water container/bag, etc
  • Twin metal bed frame, particle board cut to fit frame, twin foam mattress topper, twin sheet set, comforter, pillow
  • plastic storage bins
  • privacy curtain supplies

My plan is to get the tent, bed components, and privacy curtains figured out
and try it out overnight in my driveway. Once I have the kinks worked out, I
will then do an overnight trip at a local state park. If that works out well, I
hope to do longer (3-4 night trips) in the spring. The longer trips will be to
see if I can actually work remotely remotely.
