Plans for the remainder of the year

Winter seems to be in full swing now

Last Thursday, we had our first snow flurry of the season.  It didn't stick, but any hope of a mild winter is gone.  If the weather shows promise, I am going to go for a shake down camping trip.  However, with the lows in the 30s over the next 10 days, this doesn't seem to be a reality for me.  I want to stay within an hour or two of my house in case I have a technical failure. Camping season is ending soon in most of the Virginia state parks.

My goal for the upcoming week is to get my current gear organized so that I can put the cot, privacy curtains, and gear in the van to see how it goes. I am going to purchase a small electric heater and attempt an overnight sleep in the driveway. This will at least give me an idea if the cot is a good size and if the foam mattress is a decent thickness.  My husband doesn't think the 4 inch topper plus an egg shell topper is going to be enough padding.  Only sleeping on it will tell if this will be okay.

If the overnight in my driveway works out, then I might consider a drive down further south to SC or GA.  I will need to do this over a weekend since I still don't have a mobile internet option worked out.  Looks like I will be adding "research state parks in SC and GA" to my list of things to do.

What to do about food is next on my list to research

I have shifted my eating habits.  This has caused me to think about how to maintain my more healthy eating as I am out camping.  I know some folks get dehydrated veggies, dehydrated beans, and parboiled rice for healthier meals.  I will admit that most of my healthier meals are prepackaged, expensive items.  Learning how to to make similar meals with bulk items would be beneficial on many fronts.

  1. Hope the driveway camp out works. I am thinking about that too to try out this little heater I bought at Harbor Freight. I still need to pick up a 12v battery. Just so much going on right now with Dr. apt for my daughter and a wedding for another daughter. Hope all gets quiet after Thanksgiving.

I think our area is much to small for those propane heaters everyone talks about. I did post a picture of the new little heater I picked up. But like you hope to find electric hook up for the small heater.

  2. Jo, I agree. A truck camper and a minivan is too small for propane. I even am planning on carrying a fold up table so I can use my camping stove outside. I need to get a screen tent like yours for an outside area. That way I will have more space to have as my home when camping.

  3. Ruth - I've enjoyed your blog. I found it when I was looking for ideas on how to put curtains up in a minivan for a trip I'm embarking on. I'm actually driving from Idaho to Alaska this summer, and will spend 3 or 4 nights sleeping in my van rather than paying for hotels. I'll be working in Alaska as a tourguide, so I'm a bit of an adventurer. I came across your blog and love your spirit of adventure as well. I look forward to reading more this spring as you venture forth!

  4. HI Miriam, I am glad you enjoyed what little entries I put up on the blog. Weather in my area is almost improving enough to think about an outdoor adventure. I am too excited.

I am still working on my window coverings. This weekend, I am going to finally clean my van (well, the interior windows) and try the Velcro on the windows and cutting some fuzzy fabric to size on one window. I have high hopes for this plan. Too bad winter zapped any energy I had.

Good luck on your trip to Alaska, that sounds like an excellent adventure to have. I added your blog to my feedly account. I can't wait to hear about your adventures.
